I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I'll build a garage from scratch, and I'll put a 12' ceiling on one side, and make it a bit deeper and wider than most "2 car" garages.
I'm pretty set on a two-post lift, and I think I'll place it just far enough forward that the posts won't interfere with opening the front doors if the rear of the car is just inside the garage door. The garage will be deep enough that I can pull the car forward to put it on the lift. The posts on a two-post lift are only about 2-3 feet behind the front of the front doors when you have the car aligned for lifting, so the garage won't have to be "too" deep.
After recently buying a house and seeing a lot of "2 car" garages advertised, I wasn't too upset about finding a nice (small) house that didn't already have a garage. This way I'll get the garage I want! (Most "2 car" attached garages really should be called "1 car and 1 motorcycle" garages, or, "2 car garage if you don't mind climbing out your sunroof, since the car's doors aren't really useful once you get two cars inside this garage" garages.)
I'll be interested to see how yours shapes up. Mine is in the planning stages right now.
Cheers,
~Peter
