I go up on my screen porch roof (8 feet up) clear it off (very low ptich) after eachg storm and rake the main roof above it but only 2-3 feet back U do rake up a valley in the El there, but this works well. If i don't I get a big ice build up coming off the el. I'm putting metal up on that area in the summer. It's a multi-part solution for this house.
Here in northern New England many people have to rake the eaves, especially in older homes, or middle aged ones like ours (1966). The temperature cycles can cause melt and freeze conditions that are prime for ice dam build up. I need soffit vents and maybe some more insulation in the attic and I'll be good. Would really like not having to rake.
