I have bought two used cars from private individuals and sold five to private individuals in the past 15-18 years.
In Michigan a buyer can legally drive a recently purchased car with no license plate if:
- The Bill of sale is in the car
- Purchase was within either 48 or 72 hours (I can't remember which)
- The driver has an existing Auto Insurance Policy.
I have checked with my Insurance Agent and they will immediately cover a newly purchased car on a customer's existing policy for a short period of time. It might match the DMV time window and is for the same reason, to allow you to drive the newly purchased car home.
