Speaking of torches. Helped a turbine maintenance crew overhaul a steam turbine in a coal generation plant. The studs and nuts are huge. I can't recall if a penetrating oil was used. The wrenches were "floggers" short with blocks for handles and you beat on those with sledge hammers. Sometimes things came off. Sometimes the stud was already broken or, cracked and broke during the flogging. When the nut could not be moved on the stud the nuts were cut with a cutting torch. You could wash the steel of the nut away without damaging the stud as the stud chilled the threads. [I was able to do the same with a suspension part years later and onlookers were in disbelieve.]
Any studs that were not damaged were tested ultrasonically to eliminate any with cracks.
