Honestly, I don't know how the different premium winter tires manage the compound levels/layers, but even after a Blizzak has worn away the top tread which excels at ice, the rest of the tire will still run rings around any all-weather tire in (especially) the snow and (even) the ice.
I opted for Nokian WR's for the 2007 three winters ago as my winter tire, as I was prepared to loose some "winter" performance to gain dry pavement grip.
My wife's 9-3 had some Blizzaks on it when bought 4 years ago, and even though the "best" part has been gone for some time, they still perform great as winter tires, perhaps better than my Nokians.
Unfortunately, this spring when I swapped her tires, I saw what looked like a slice in the tread, but I think is an actual crack in the rubber. Even though there's still a good amount of tread in the other three, I'm ditching all four as they've got to be somewhat old, I don't trust them.
Not sure what I'll get her in the next month or two, but Blizzaks are on the short list.
