Looks are subjective. Objectively, GT are based on Chinese long wheelbase version, so they have significantly more room, especially in the back. Much more practical than the wagon for families with little kids in car seats.
Personally, I would get the X1 instead. Neither the GT, nor the X1 is available with manual gearbox, which is apparently not a factor here. Both are small hatchbacks but X1 is significantly cheaper.
