This is a complete lie. You do not HAVE to register or "marry" your battery, even if some BMW models will get more life out of a battery if it is registered with the ECU. If your battery dies in a remote location, you can absolutely install a generic battery and go on driving without any issues. The battery will simply not last as long. How long do you ask? Well, I just had to replace the battery in my 2003 325i, so that's 11 years of reliable service in Northeast weather with the car stored outside.
Also, you can absolutely register the new battery yourself with a $35 cable from eBay. In fact, you can register it with a phone app and a $5 bluetooth OBD-II adapter.
One of the best advantages on owning a BMW is that you can do so much yourself with computer systems in the car. It uses Blackberry QNX operating system and is very accessible and very, very interesting to tinker with. All you need is a $35 cable. Check out bmwcoding dot com.
