The Dutch and Danes have better cycling infrastructure that better separates cars and cyclists and reduces the speed of cars. Cars hurt. I wouldn't be too concerned about a helmet on bike paths... roads with cars, yeah helmet for sure!
Helmets work really well for preventing skull fractures. Skull fractures really are not nice and I don't want one so I wear a helmet! What helmets are not great for is preventing concussions and I think that is where some scientists talk about it... and rightfully so. Helmets are not a panacea. One must bike carefully! You are very vulnerable on the road and can easily be killed while wearing a helmet.
I wear a high end mtb helmet (though 6D is intriguing - hadn't seen those, thanks!). It's all about fit, weight, and ventilation. Cost does not factor in it to me. All the helmets are tested to meet safety norms. Does not mean they are all equally safe, but it does mean they all meet a standard. There are different standards however! The hard shelled helmets for BMX/Skateboarding etc are designed to take *multiple* hits, as one typically sees in those sports where one crashes a lot. Road and mtb helmets are to be thrown in the garbage after a significant crash (head impact)... and after a number of years for age.
So yeah if you are only going to ride slowly on a cruiser on bike lanes away from traffic (like the Dutch and Danes), you probably don't even need a helmet. Around here, with road rage and speeding SUVs galore, I wouldn't be caught dead without one!
