No one was making a profit, the United States was the worst it's ever been in years or tens of years. Everyone and their brother stopped buying. Was the worst foreclosure in history nobody was going to run out and buy a new car in them days.
Even still there are reports GM knew about Colbolts ignition problem long before 2008 last I seen is they were worned in a letter from an safty engineer working for GM around 2001 about potentially falty ignitions. But GM decided to ignor the problem becouse the cost increase was to much. I can't remember the exact amount they were quoted but it was somewhere around 35 cents pr car. When the topic wasn't being addressed the engineer pressed the issue and was fired things got sweped under the rug. Untill the Colbolts started killing people and it just so happend to be becouse of what this safty engineer saw in early 2000. So why not avoid a potential chit storm with Saab and just sweep the entire brand under the rug.
Everyone will understand sales just weren't cutting it to keep the brand afloat in the 2008 recession. Kill two birds with one stone, tons and tons of Saabs litter the roads still today best darn car ever made but it couldn't survive 2008 and for good reason. GM wanted it dead with the pending law suit from the Colbolts ignition switches.
