OT: It pays to buy replacement parts B4 they are needed Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 22 Nov 2015 06:29:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
We woke up this morning to a house that was 59 degrees. Our set back thermostat is programmed for 62 degrees at night so clearly something was wrong.
The most common culprit in these situations is the flame detector. Because of this I keep a spare on hand and have showed my wife how to diagnose the problem using the blinking LEDs on the control panel. I also showed her how to gently clean the flame sensor using either 0000 steel wool or a piece of brown paper bag. Most times a gentle cleaning is all that is required. I used to travel a lot for work so it was imperative she knew this stuff.
Today the problem was a glow ignitor that was not glowing. I keep one of those on hand too. If not for a mounting hole in the flame rail that would not stop enlarging itself everytime I screwed in a sheet-metal screw for the ignitor's mounting bracket, this would have been a 5 minute repair. Sure beats calling a repaiman, waiting 90 minutes for them to arrive, and then paying "truck prices" for the new part plus an hour or so minimum for labor.
House is warming up nicely and I will be buying another ignitor from RepairClinic.com, which is only 8 miles away so I avoid shipping costs with their counter pick-up option.
