I'm an old HVAC Engineer Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 23 Nov 2015 03:08:17 In Reply to: Re: OT: It pays to buy replacement parts B4 they are needed, EAnderson, Sun, 22 Nov 2015 20:44:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
And all Engineers are risk adverse. Heating systems never fail in the Spring and Fall when you can get by without them for a while, they only fail when you need them. $30 for an ignitor and $20 for a flame detector are cheap insurance in my mind. Sort of like the Green Rollers and Coolant By-Pass Valve in my parts cabinet (actually a MacKay hose set now) for my Saabs.
The furnace is 12-15 years old and this may be the first time I have had to replace the ignitor. I remember replacing the flame sensor once previously, after the original sensor started requiring two cleanings per year. Can't complain too much about it getting dirty and then flaky since it spends its entire life sitting in a flame. Even natural gas has some soot producing comtaminants in its flame.
