I agree with that - I don't use cruise either. Until I can legitimately not pay attention, I don't see the value of having my feet off the pedals or any other reduction in involvement.
Interestingly, though, I feel like Tesla's autopilot is on the same level as cruise control, and you have the exact same requirement as a driver - PAY ATTENTION. I feel like these people who are letting autopilot crash them into things are any different from people who set the cruise and drive into traffic or stay glued to the GPS and drive off a cliff. It's a complete failure of good human sense, not an evil technology. If you can't manage your tech responsibly, don't use it.
