I drove down to SC yesterday, and got back home to Raleigh today. I spent most of the day today at the Total Eclipse Watch Party in Sumpter SC.

I didnt want to deal with traffic and crowds so rather than driving to Columbia or Charleston I chose a small town with a small town festival. Back roads down and back, about 3 hrs in my '08 SC. A beautiful country drive.

The festival was fun. lots of folks in chairs and blankets under trees. Picnic lunches, lots of kids. The festival started at noon, with music, games, kiddie activities and even drone racing. all of that hub-bub was at one end of the park ... the rest of the park was mostly open and clear (and pleasantly quiet).

The eclipse was breathtaking. As obscuration went from 98-99% it got cool and it began to get dark. stars began to appear. the horizon looked liked sunset ... in every direction; a 360 degree sunset. As it went from 99-100% the sky quickly faded from dark blue to black. Stars above were bright.

Approaching totality the sun turned from yellow to red/orange to a bright, pure white. Just before totality the bright white "diamond ring" appeared

then totality

EDIT: These are not my pictures, but these pictures are exactly what we saw

we had totality for a little more than 1.5 minutes. the sight is incredible. The crowd cheered and clapped and then everyone got quiet and we all just took it in, speechless.

at the end of totality the diamond ring appeared again on the other side. the sky brightened, the stars faded away, and just like that it was over.

The weather could not have been better. It was hot and sunny, but breezy and comfortable under the trees. clouds on the horizon but cloudless above. No risk of a last minute cloud ruining the show.

This was my first total eclipse, it couldn't have been a better one!
