If you had followed procedure and filed a form with the state we live in Arizona this couldn't have happened to you you file a simple form it says says you no longer own the car I didn't one time and there was an incident however when I explained that I had signed the title over and the new owner just never put it in their name I was off the hook legally so I doubt you really had to get it out of impound you could have just refused saying it's not my car anymore I sold it
every state has a similar procedure you could have easily found out the correct procedure by just going to your State's website and reading about it so you have only yourself to blame really for not following the rules are there for a reason and even when I didn't follow the rules in Arizona I was okay I just had to fill out an affidavit that I sold the car
And these kind of scenarios like you mentioned are very very rare
