I see nice 9-5s come up for sale now and then, especially if you look in non-salt parts of the country. For me, there is no substitute for the 9-5 wagon in terms of space and driving pleasure. I have ridden in a Subaru with the CVT and was not impressed with that shifting, but you seem to get used to it. The space in the Subaru is nice but the ride isn’t impressive and the interior is just average. I don’t know about the long term reliability of the Subaru engines. Relatives have a Forester and had to fix a major external oil leak. Now the engine is using oil internally and requires a quart every few hundred miles. The repair is very expensive so they just have to ride around with jugs of oil until they replace the car. Another relative has an old Outback and you have to add some sort of Subaru sludge to the coolant to prevent head gasket leaks. It makes the coolant look dirty as soon as you replace it but I guess it works. Maybe they have dealt with some of these problems in recent engines or the relatives have just been unlucky with their cars. Saabs are not without their issues, but I have two of the older “sludge” engine 9-5s that are still going strong after 20+ years with only regular maintenance after the improved PCV upgrade.
