In New Orleans we have the worst roads you can imagine. Really. Without any exageration, driving more than 15 mph on many of our narrow, almost unpaved roads is dangerous. I can only drive my Saab on certain main roads or crawl along at 10 - 15 mph. Otherwise, I end up with bend rims, blown rubber, and broken control arms.
I bought a '99 S-10 pick up 4X4 in '99. Its automatic, and has COLD A/C (necessary in our climate). When I have a million errands to run about town I take the S-10. It is just so much better on the streets here than my Saabs. Is it safe? In town, yes. I would never take it on a long trip on any kind of highway, the maneuravability required at highway speeds simply is not there.
Further, it tends to flood here quite regularly. The height of the S-10 keeps water ingress and soaked ECU's to a minumum.
So yes, I can appreciate trucks, but I operate on nearly unpaved roads in what is lake when we have heavy rain. Most people who have SUV's simply drive from one paved paking lot to another via a good road, crushing all Miatas and Triumphs in their path.
