My ***black*** 9-3 likes a high carnuba wax from a mom 'n pop operation out of Victoria, British Columbia. The business guy, Ernie's a concours Porsche man and you KNOW what they're like. He "harrumphs" Zymol but I've never used it so how do I know?
A range of products is offered and I bought the carwash (excellent too), the once-a-year pre-wax polish, the wax, and an after-spray which can be applied anytime after waxing to bring the wet look wax up again as long as your wax has any life left at all.
The price is right, the results, swirl-free and as "wet-looking" as you want, and the stuff wintered extremely well here in Canada @ two coats - three on the leading edges. I do NOT use a buffer and had apply and polish. The only circular motion ever used on this ***black*** car is in applying the wax and there, I use my bare hand.
I use Mothers Back to Black on the door and other opening rubbers and plastic trim (plain old peanut oil to clean first) and Turtle Black Chrome on the tires.
I use a German product called Autosol on the chrome and alloy wheel surfaces and RainX (or equivalent) on the glass. Any wax will do on the alloy wheels. Good place for leftover wax as are the door/hatch openings.
To clean all glass surfaces, I use a little vinegar and a lot of water in a spray bomb and wipe with old newspapers, inside as required but mostly outside.
For brake dusting (you will get this) make sure you wax the wheels often. I use an old paintbrush to dry-sweep the wheels. Others prefer special chemicals and water but I don't like (a) using water if I can avoid it and (b) chemicals of any kind if I can avoid them.
For the carpets (after vacuuming), I use a household carpet cleaner as per label, a scrub brush and a towell. For the dash and vinyls I use a damp towell and the carpet cleaner seems to work for soda pop drops and the cupholder area on all vinly surfaces.
I keep a Swiffer in the car and find myself using it to keep the dust to an absolute minimum.
On the leather I use Roots leather conditioner. Roots is a Canadian high quality leather jacket maker.
If you have an antenna, thoroughly clean it at least once a week with WD40 or equivalent on a rag, rubbing it down well. The purpose is to remove grit, not lubricate.
Many people at the dealership compliment me on the appearance of the car on the rare times I go there.
