SAAB is at least being honest about resale value in their factory leases.
Where the savings happen in the SAAB leases is in the interest rate. Many of the sales incentives are built in the rate. Therefore, the actual lease payment will be less than a comparable car with the same capital costs and residual. For instance, when I got my 2000 convertible, I priced it against a BMW 323ic. The BMW has a slightly lower sticker price, but the lease payments were $170 month more.
Why? High discounts off MSRP and low incentive lease interest rates made a big difference.
Sometimes it is best to compare the lease payments using the same length of lease and other terms and find out what the "real" value of the car is on a monthly basis. This is true even if you plan to buy the car.
BTW, Your friend's Viggen has a residual of only about 48%, based on MSRP of about $48K and purchase price of $43K. This seems somewhat low for any SAAB convertible despite the low actual resale. Based on my rough calculations, that would come to about $720/mo (at 6% interest). I love my SAAB, but no SAAB is worth that kind of $$$.
