Sorry guys, but your theories on Saab resale value won't work. Why? Several reasons:
1. New Saabs are being HEAVILY discounted. A brand new base 9-3 can be had for $21,000. There are currently $4,300 in dealer incentives on these cars. Heavy incentives destroy the resale values of vehicles.
2. Local dealers are selling used '99 9-5 Sedans with 25-30K miles on them for $19,995. Bye-bye resale value- hello incredible used value.
3. 9-3s have Toyota-like quality? Look, I love Saab and I feel they are generally reliable, but I still need a lot of convincing their quality is equal to that of a Toyota. Toyota and Honda maintain stellar resale value because their vehicles, although boring, have achieved bulletproof reliability and are well engineered.
4. BMW Z3s and Porsche Boxsters retain more of their value because they are better cars than a 9-3 convertible. Period. I've driven both- Please drive these cars before you disagree with me in public. BMW in particular puts together a magnificent automobile- all of them, not just the Z3.
5. The solution with Saab is to ALWAYS buy used. That is their beauty, because they are fantastic cars, and they are a killer value when purchased pre-owned. In 1998 I bought my first Saab, a '95 900S. $24,000 new, I bought it for $10,800 in MINT CONDITION with 80,000 miles. It now has 127,000 miles and as I've bragged on this board before, it is still like brand new.
In 1999, I bought a '95 Aero with 60,000 miles for $16,000. The car stickered in '95 for $42-43,000.
Used Saabs rock, but I don't foresee an improvement in their resale values anytime soon.
