Hmmm - Saabs, Sweden - Snow?
Saabs have been great snow cars since they were first built. Front wheel drive, balanced handling, and volcanic heaters.
Put on four good snow tires and you'll be able to go anywhere. Forget studs- studs only help with ice, and you probably won't see that much ice.
The good part about 4wd is you have traction at all four corners. This is useful for getting started. The trouble with 4wd is when it comes on an SUV, you give up handling over a smaller, more agile sedan, like a Saab. Handling is key. Getting going in snow is easy - keeping the car on the road, and not in the ditch, into a tree, or over an embankment is the hard part.
The trouble I see with SUVs is that people don't get stuck. If you don't have the skill level to get the car going, what makes you think you've got the skills to keep it on the road, or stop? Nowdays anybody can drop their Chevy Subdivision 4WD into low and stomp the gas, and they'll get moving. Unfortunatley, the vehicle doesn't have the handling to keep the car where the driver wants.
Think about approaching a downhill curve on snow. What would you rather be in - a car with a low center of gravity and good handling and brakes, or a big 2 ton box with a high center of gravity and loose steering?
