I've heard on the VW boards that the Sulphur content of the diesel in the US is a big reason for the lack of interesting engines in the US. The 90hp VW TDi in the Golf/Jetta/New Beetle is offered in Europe with (I think) 120-130hp, but VW doesn't want to sell it here because of problems with the fuel. I keep hearing great things about the reduced emissions levels of the direct-injection diesels, so I don't know how accurate the emissions concern is (also, if you measure emissions per amount of fuel burned, a diesel may produce more emissions on paper, yet still produce less nasty stuff overall due to the reduced quantity of fuel used). Still, too many Americans remember the Oldsmobile diesels of the 70s-80s, and who could forget the Chevette diesel, which ran out of road before making it to 60mph in a magazine test (I think the 1/4 mile was 24sec at 58mph or something). That's slower than my wife's C900 auto :-)
