Actually I think that it's normal, especially for European cars, to have the filler pipe on the right side - if you are driving on the right...
In Italian cities, for example, your local Shell station may just be a single pump at the side of the street; that would make it very impractical with the filling pipe on the left.
Regarding the exhaust I think it's considered more "polite" to have the exhaust fumes directed away from pedestrians. Thus (single) exhaust pipes are on the left - except for Japanese and British cars!
