I did the drive to Trollhättan on the weekend after a business trip to Stockholm 3 years ago. Took about 6 hours, but was fun. There's a tourist office in Trollhättan, around the corner from the Saab Museum and they can book you a cheap room somewhere. The town is pleasant, and there's a nice river running through it. The museum made it worth it, but the factory doesn't offer tours anymore (as far as I know). Saab was responsive when I emailed them that I was coming to Trollhättan, so you can try the main website and ask for info.
