From a purely practical perspective cars are typically a depreciating asset - - - but then again I like nothing more than getting a new car every year. . . and there is nothing wrong with enjoying things if you can afford them. I typically have 3 cars that go in rotation. I take very good care of the cars and the dealers typically love when they see me coming in for a new car because they know the one I am trading in is going to be showroom new shape. Also I could whine about the money I lose and the money the dealers makes but hell money makes the world go round.
Also because I revolve cars so often I don't have to worry about expensive maintenance concerns, I know the cars typically have the latest safety features and also they probably meet lower pollution standards etc etc.
I see it this way - - if you are comfortable with what you have then you should be happy. Don't look at others and never live beyond your means. There will always be people who have more and you can't buy absolute happiness - - although you certainly can buy alot of smiles and fun stuff.
I often see people in older vehicles that are well taken care of and I think that they are obviously very happy with there car . . . and that is a good thing. I still see some of my previous Saabs out on the road - and I have to say they typically look pretty good and I am happy that they are having a good life after me . . .
