I watched this show last nicht after the news.
Was on a new tool that is used to open door locks
and that is more and more used for car theft.
The tool looks kind of funny and emulates a key...
and it will emulate any key used in a VW, Porsche,
Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Seat, Skoda, Ford you name it!
The only locks immune to this are:
a) The good old tiny GM locks... oh well...
b) Those that check for the key chip while you open the
door or start the engine! And most cars don't check for
for the chip when you open the door.
As to make this funny the tool was given to the show
moderator after a brief training of a couple of minutes...
and off they go to open and start some cars...
Porsche 1998 model: Open in 17 seconds (New models take longer)
BMW 530 2001 model: Open in 27 seconds
VM Gold 2001 model: Open in 28 seconds
Audi A4 2002 model: Open in 47 seconds
Mercedes E320 2001 model: Open in 57 seconds
Ford GalaxyVan 2001 model: Open in 3 minutes
In each case the owner was next to his car, and they
were all more then unhappy about their anti-theft systems.
Interesting fact... the moderator was able to start the engine
using the same tool for all of the cars... after an extra minute.
They concluded that many dealers don't activate the
chip in the key during delivery or that in some new
cars the chip system is NOT working properly.
Insurance representatives commented that the car industry was
still not doing much to prevent car theft, they added that
German cars are REAL EASY TO STEAL.
Guess the tool will soon hit the US... makes me wonder...
does the 9-5 and the 9-3 use a chip in its keys?
Regards,
Coolknight
