I got my first DSS system when DirecTv and DSSB where the only games. when I wanted to add 3 additional TV's the costs at the time (1995) where atronomical. At the time, each receiver might as well have been a new customer. So I dumped them and went back to TCI (now AT&T Broadband). I never really had any gripes aobut "analog" cable. Then digital cable came out and I bit the hook. BIG mistake!!!
I live in an older part of the city, and the infrastructure/wiring for cable is pretty old. First, I never consistently got all of the pay channels in the master bedroom. The real fun was when I would buy a pay per view. Either the system wouldn't let me purchase unless I called in, or if I were upstairs, it would drop part way through the program, never to return. Customer service was totally useless.
Then, I decided to remodel a bedroom, so I unplugged one of the cable boxes and put it in another room for storage. Well the project took a bit longer than I had anticipated, so the box remained disconnected for some time. First thing that happened was I had a service tech (third party not the cable company) show up at my door, unannounced to "fix a problem". As I had not reported any, I had given up on them being able to fix my problems without rewiring the neighborhood, so I was a tad suspicious.
I called the cable company to verify, and found that periodically the cable company polls the boxes instructed them to dial in. I was told that one of my boxes was no longer doing this, so it must be replaced. I explained that I was remodeling, etc, hung up and sent the service tech on his way. Well about a month later, all cable stopped working. I called in to find that even though I was paying my bill, all service was terminated until I agreed to hook up the disconected box. After I got my city council person involved, service was restored. two other annoyances were cable that died when it rained, even a light drizzle (As I said the infrastructure was ancient) and even though the adverts of the time said cable modem available where there was digital cable, it wasn't available in my area. Seems the infrastructure was old and faulty and wouldn't support a clean signal. Now remember, they kept telling me my cable problems were the result of my all new high quality wiring. So on a whim I called DirecTV back. Service was now comparably priced, they have customer service, and the only downside is that during REALLY hard, hunt for the storm cellar kind of weather I loose the signal. A VAST improvement over AT&T, AND I can order movies without a call that took navigating through SEVEN levels of voice prompting! I went DSL for the other stuff.
DirecTV has my endorsement.
