Growing up, the cars were always distinguished by their color. Way back in my childhood, the cars were purchased new. As a baby, my folks owned a '60-something VW bug (family legend says that it had a name- "the galloping rust spot"). When it died, there was the "green car" ('72 96), joined six years later by the "brown car" ('78 99L). When I got my driver's license in '86, some high school friends started to call the 96 "the big green cockroach", which luckily didn't have the staying power to become an actual name.
After the brown car was recalled in '86 (for more info, search the "other models" bulletin board for "belgian paint"), my parents got a low-mileage '83 900 4-door- the "blue car". A week after getting all shined up for my junior prom, the green car was traded in (with 190,000 faithful miles) for an '80 900GLi- the "yellow car".
A few years into college, I was sold the yellow car, which gave its life to protect me in a side-impact collision. It was, however, known for a brief time as "the toastmobile" because my college rock band (Crystal Toast) could fit ALL of our gear into it. My '83 900T was the first one not referred to by its color- aka "rose quartz". The paint seemed to change color depending on the ambiant light and depth of grime on the exterior. The car never looked dirty until the dirt started to cake, and I would answer questions about the color by telling people that it was "metallic mud". Somehow, the description never fit, and it became the first of 3 cars known as "Tom's car". It lasted 225,000 miles, followed by an '86 900T which went to 205,000, and my current '86 SPG- running strong at 219,000 with plenty of parts from the previous two.
The blue car became known as "Dad's car", and the "tan car" ('86 900 4-door) was known thereafter as (of course) "Mom's car". "Dad's car" is now a 2001 9-3 (lightning blue), which replaced a silver '89 900 hatchback. "Mom's car is now a '91 9000 (citrin beige, I think)
If anybody wants to name my car, feel free to volunteer suggestions.
