Most Japanese engines don't reach peak horsepower until 6000-7000 RPM, and low end torque is almost non-existant. Turbocharged engines put out maximum torque closer to 2000 RPM, and they don't rev as high, so peak horsepower is also lower, and more useable. There was nothing wrong with your Honda's engine, except that it's a typical Japanese engine. As for timing belts, my family has a small fleet of Hondas, and we've replaced every timing belt twice. It's not that hard.
