My dad drove tanks (actually M-10 & M-36 tank destroyers) in WW2 & he didn't see an auto trans tank till the war was over & he was waiting around to get shipped home. I think the auto trans tanks barely made it in time for the end of the war.
When he was in boot camp, they told him that the US's advantage was that we could build tanks faster than the enemy could blow them up. Comforting, huh?
