why not expand the engine pallette. We are close to maxing out reliable horsepower on the 4 cyl. (Spare the 1000hp 4cyl race engine comments, the key is RELIABLE horsepower.) If we want to keep rising in HP with the rest of the competitors, we need a powerplant that can be stretched into the 400hp range without compromising ease of ownership. With a V6, 400-450 horsepower is completely viable, and easy to obtain without harsh high output turbos or the need for high octane fuel, etc. Remember, we can get all of the horsepower in the world out of our 2.3 litre powerplant, but not on pump fuel. Already with some of the aftermarket ECM upgrades, you run the risk of hurting an engine if the correct octane isn't used (especially at higher altitudes).
There will always be a 4 cyl available, but for the 'gusto' models, we need more. The fashioning of aluminum has come a long way and with today's technology, an ultra-lightweight 6 cylinder engine block is an easy task. Remember the article on the all-aluminum V8 that was being tested in the 9-5? It's weight was comparable to our existing 4 cylinder.
Cheers,
Brian.
