I was very close to buying a 2002 VW GTI 1.8T this past summer, until the local dealer made me sufficiently angry not to. I test drove Jettas and GTIs with this engine: it is very nice, and definitely moves the GTI with alacrity. It was smooth, quiet, and offered lots of low-end power. It bogged down a bit with the AC blasting in first gear, but was no worse than my Saab that way (a matter of getting used to it). The only things I didn't like about the Jetta, especially, and the GTIs to a lesser extent, were the mushy cornering characteristics; this, and price, led me into my beautiful used 9-3 SE HOT.
The best test-drive I took was in a Demo GTI: beautiful summer day, broken-in engine, country roads, and howling tire-chirping gear changes. You should go out and take a few drives. Just don't let any of those pesky salesmen come along for the ride, unless they have a change of undergarmets.
Best,
Lutfisk
