When you're talking BMWs, don't bother with model years, make sure you know the E-numbers (design code) e.g. http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/e_code.shtml:
'89-95 5-series: E34
'96-03 5-series: E39 (no '96 in US)
'87-94 7-series: E32
'95-01 7-series: E38
The E32 and E34 have a lot of parts in common, as do the E38 and V8 E39s. The 6-cylinder E39s used a completely different lower front suspension.
The E38s and E39s got the M62TU engine in '99, with single VANOS and a fair bit more low-end torque, it makes a difference towing those big things around.
It is a *far* bigger car than your 9-3, with all the good and the bad that that implies. You'll find it has no more front-seat room (RWD, you've got a big transmission tunnel between the seats), more rear-seat legroom (particularly in the long-wheelbase cars, 740iL etc) but little if any more trunk room.
We've got two E39s, I find them very comfortable, the sport seats are fabulous, the seating position is excellent, outward visibility not as good as our 9000 but far better than most everything else out there (like that Chrysler 300C and its little bunker-vision-slit windows), onboard electronics (nav, stereo, etc.) obsolete even at the time the cars were built (I've collected all the bits to update the M5 to the later DVD-based nav, at least), reliability has been good but not perfect.
