A noise from the valve mechanism is more of a tap tap tap as it's at half the speed of the crank.
A rattle sounds like a crank, rod or piston issue. Has it ever overheated? Overheating sometimes cracks piston skirts. Or it might be the timing chain.
You can take a huge screwdriver and place the blade on the various parts of the engine and the handle to your ear and maybe help pinpoint the noice.
