I had an '86 Jetta that went thru lots of spark plug wires while I had it. It would stumble just like a carburator car without enough choke. Watching for arcing in the dark is a good idea, it works even better if the engine is thoroughly cold. It's a lot easier than visually trying to find defects in the insulation.
ps... Mike, that's the secondary ignition stuff. The primary ignition circuit is the 12v stuff. (Dontcha love this site, there's always someone ready to edumacate us...)
