I bought my first Saab in '94, my dad had two back in the '80s. Since '84, I have always had at least one Saab, more often than not two, and from time to time as many as ten. :D But just because I love Saabs doesn't mean I don't love other cars. I've also had
Alfa 164Q & Milano & GTV6
BMW 325es x2 & 528i (the cool E12 version)
Cadillac CTS-V & Fleetwood 75
Chevy Suburban x2
Ford Taurus SHO & Falcon
Merkur XR4Ti x2
Pontiac Solstice & Trans Am & Fiero GT
Volvo 745t & V70t
VW Jetta MkIV x2
I also had for a very brief period of time a 1st gen Mazda Protege, a 4th gen Honda Accord wagon, a PT Cruiser, and a Saturn SL. I'm not really proud of that Saturn, but at least I've never owned a Toyota. :D I jest - these are cars that I've bought for other people, but kept around for a few months to iron out issues before passing them on.
Hilariously, my annual mileage is in the 8k-10k range so on average any given car does maybe 2500 miles a year. My insurance company keeps asking if I'm a dealer, and I have to keep reassuring them I just like to try out different cars. Like I tell my girl, you like to try lots of shoes, I like to try lots of cars. The difference is when I'm done with a car I can usually sell it for what I paid, and sometimes more. Shoes go to Goodwill - if we're lucky!
Most recently, I was trying to talk myself into something "sensible," like a new Fusion Hybrid or a Jetta Sportwagen diesel. In the end, though, thirty grand for something that didn't truly excite me was a tough pill to swallow. I figured six grand wasn't a big deal, and the $24k spread buys a LOT of premium unleaded. Worst case, my fuel costs are about $2500/yr in the Jag (all city miles). Best possible car in the Jetta or Fusion (all highway miles) I'm spending $900. A $1600 spread in a car that has probably very close to bottomed out in terms of depreciation with no payment and much cheaper insurance? Very defensible financially. Assuming of course I can keep it on the road - fingers crossed :)
