The old redblock can't really survive a real overheating. The problem must have been gradual enough that it did not suffer a real one. You are just lucky, unless symptoms show up later. The slow coolant leak could be your head gasket, you know.
Do those 940 have temperature compensating boards in their temp gauges? If yes, that could explain why the problem was not noticed by your family members. The gauge will stay in the middle until the very end, when the temperature rises (or falls) way to much. This is done to make US consumers less nervous about temperature fluctuations. I believe it was pioneered by the Japanese. It is possible to remove the temp compensating board from the gauge cluster and solder the terminals so the gauge shows true temperature instead of staying in the middle. Search on numerous Volvo boards for more info re temperature compensating board.
As far as getting your female loved ones to pay attention, it is all in your hands. If you educate them on these things you will not have a problem. Women in my family give repair advice to their friends ;)
