I have probably seen more Volvos with badly overheated engines than Saab.
They kind of suffer the same faith when it happens, aluminum cylinder head warped.
But Volvo also have a tendency to get wrist pin knock after a bad overheat session, something I haven't seen on Saabs.
When the red paint between cylinder 2 and 3 is discolored and the temp and coolant sensor is melted together with a melted timing belt backing plate, than it's time for a new or used engine. No use trying to just do the head and gasket. It's plenty of used engine out there.
The physically broken thermostat on the Volvos is a big problem and have been going on for 30 years and is still going.
Always replace the thermostat with the 60K service.
