I bought a new '96 Ford Contour SE back in the day and, while no babe magnet (like a SAAB!), I thought it was a perfectly decent car. Under $18K out the door at 0.9% financing with leather interior, sunroof, 5-spd manual, etc.
Found out, though, that it was built at Ford's plant in Hermosillo, Sonora as the VIN started with a '3.' After that, the car didn't have the same prestige (as if a Contour could even have 'prestige') as it would have if it had been assembled with the other Contours in Kansas City (I know, the center of 'prestige'). In any event, I don't have that same negative feel towards cars assembled in Mexico anymore.
I just saw a Fiat 4-dr 500 made in Serbia, and I suspect we'll be getting Buicks sourced out of China sooner rather than later just like BMW sourced 3-Series models out of South Africa for a few years. I suppose the low wages make up for the shipping costs.
