Bill,
I just had my engine rebuilt by PAECO....the SRE package, which included a new cam grind. I don't have my PAECO catolog in front of me, but I thought the cam grind you referred to was the SAT-6600. The "SA" series was for single overhead cam applications, hence the additional "T" designation. Also, this cam grind revs to 6600 rpm, not just 6000. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Regarding PAECO customer service. I think it's lousy. I dropped my engine off early Dec. 99. They reference a 4 month turnaround. Plus or minus a month or so....which I could live with. End of August I got my engine back. Numerous call during spring and early summer from me, not them regarding status. Never once did Carl call and say "Hey, were waiting for something." I had no problem dropping the $5K+ up front, but I was not pleased with the service.
Regarding PAECO cam grinds. PAECO DOES NOT grind the cams. They send them out to Reed Cams in Atlanta. How do I know this. When I was reassembling my engine I went to put the distributor in. Funny, it wouldn't go...put my finger up in the hole and realized the cut outs for the distribtor on the cam weren't there. Confirmed with a finger feel. Pulled valve cover and they had installed the cams reversed. Exhaust was on intake side and vice versa. I called him and he said, just bring it back, we'll fix it. No way was I going to drive the engine back to him for who knows how long. Fortunately, the shop where I'm doing the work has an owner who knows hi-po applications, albeit V-8. So we pulled the cams and got to wondering "If installed reversed, were they ground reversed." Carl says no way, but given some of the other "failure to pay attention to details" we discovered on the engine, e.g., alum flywheel with no dowel pins inserted, use of lithium grease on the valve train, we decided to have them checked. Called an engine builder who was flowing a new exhaust manifold for me and he referred me to Reed's Cams in Atl. I had noticed that the name "Reed" was inscribed on the cams when I had the valve cover off. Called Reeds. Low and behold, they did the cam grinds. Took the cams down there and they verified they were ground properly. More importantly, they gave me all the specs for the Intake, Exhaust and Installation....everything. So, instead of paying the $400+ dollars and waiting who knows how long to get the cams back....I'll fax you a copy of the cam grinds and you can find a quality shop in Denver and have them reground.....or contact Reed Cams (770) 474-7320 and tell them what you want. I think the manager is Steve. I can't even remember his name and it was only last month.
Believe me, if I felt that I got treated right at PAECO, I would be telling everyone to go there. By the way, I asked Carl to get me ARP fasteners for the con-rods, head studs and exhaust manifold. I even paid him for them up front. I didn't care what the cost was, I wanted it done right. He told me that he was still waiting for the ARP exh. manifold studs when I called about engine stat in Aug. I said I'd pick the engine up and he could send me the exh. studs. When I got the engine, he said ARP did not sell exh. studs....or head studs.....or con rod bolts, notwithstanding the fact that I paid for them...or something. Apparently he went with new stock units.....which should have been part of a hi-po reubild anyway. What engine builder in their right mind would reinstall original head studs and con-rod bolts on an engine with 300K miles that'sg getting a hi-po rebuild. My blood is starting to boil just thinking about it. Also, no new chain guide tensioner. My mechanic almost went ballastic when he way that. NO way would I have known had I not pulled the valve cover. Think about this regarding installation of the cams by PAECO. How in the hell could you properly align the cams if there in reversed....you can't, but that's what I got. Failure to pay attention. I just pray there's nothing else dicked up internally.
I have not installed engine yet because I'm finishing up some front suspension work. Maybe in two to three weeks. It's been so long it really doesn't matter anymore, however, I will post everything I've done. If it runs right, it should be a civilized animal.
