Hi,
Transmissions breaking are due to a number of reasons:
1. Software giving too abrupt boost at low revs
2. Careless driving, i.e. allowing too much wheelspin, keeping WOT over uneven parts of road etc
3. Neglecting to change transmission oil regularly, or using the wrong kind of fluid
4. Being tempted by the "torque temptress" and going for more than 400-420 ft lbs of torque (which is a "reasonable level of madness").
My friend ran his 510 hp 9000 Aero at 12,10/121 mph this past summer. Rear seat was removed, that's all. Perfectly streetable car, stock transmission with a Sellholm LSD. It's now been run quite heavily during well over a season on that transmission.
Also, transmission rebuilds are too often done on too tight a budget, with too many used parts. A well built gearbox will handle power very well.
Another friend has run his 470 hp 9-5 Aero during well over 2 years (30K miles) without issues, and the 9-5 is a very heavy car.
Best regards,
KK
