In theory, for any given car, top speed is proportional to the cube root of power. So, if the top speed of my 200bhp 9kt is 146mph, I'd have to double the power to 400 bhp to reach 184 mph. To reach 200 would require 520 bhp.
However, gearing is also a factor and I would have to rev my car to over 8,000 rpm to run at 184. Cue instant disintegration - if the ECU were to allow it in the first place.
Now we need a formula to calculate the degree of lunacy required to (a) drive at 180 on the highway and (b) brag about it afterwards, with video.
Confession time - the fastest I've driven an a public road is an indicated 140, in a Lagonda Rapide (Vantage engine) and it was legal because I did it at the age of 17, before the UK imposed a 70 mph limit on motorways. Thank you, Dad!
