I think you'll find that at 10W is VERY thick at temps like 32 deg F. I think it's roughly the equivalent of a 40 weight oil at that point. The reason that most manufacturers have gone to a 5W or even a 0W rating on the low side is that oil is very thick when cold.
If you've ever drained hot oil from your motor you already know this... but you didn't necessarilly pay attention. Just think about how thin your oil is when you drain it hot.. it's actually thinner than what is in the can, but cold your oil is rated a "0W" and hot it's a "40 weight".
It makes more sense when you realize that 0W means "0 WINTER", not "0 WEIGHT" and that the number is in no way comparable to the hot rating i.e. the 40 WEIGHT part of "0W-40". The method for measuring the cold rating on an oil is not at all compatible to the method for measuring the hot rating - so, for example, a 0w-40 oil is oddly never less than a 40 weight (hot) in your engine.
Bottom line, the lower the better on the cold rating - especially if you live where it actually gets cold.
