Well put. There's a reason for the rating system we have, convoluted, misunderstood, and questionable as it is... it's still a bit better than raw single points of data.
If Amsoil 10W is close to 0W in Winter peformance, I can only make only make two guesses on why it's rated that way: 1. They could not clear the lower test bar, and had to accept 10W as the rating or 2. They didn't want to make three oils (0w, 5w, 10w) so their selling their 5W as a 10W or similar. You could check their other specs and compare.
Regardless, we should all use a 0W oil. Everyone's oil is WAY too thick at startup. The only reason I can see for going higher is if you need a higher upper end and fear the effects of viscosity improvers. I think the viscosity improvers are a non-issue these days - at least f you choose a good oil. YM - and preference - MV.
