I am not talking about 0w-40... I'm talking about 10w40. Unless you know something different than I do, it's hydrocracked Group 3 at worst and a blend of 3 and 4 at best (as is Motul 6100). The formulation of Mobil 1 has certainly changed at least a few times over the last several years.
Regardless of that, base stock is hardly the only deciding factor in oil quality. Additive packages, detergent packages, and final physical properties are the important bits.
I originally looked into Motul because it meets quite a few extremely stringent certifications which Mobil 1 does not. That's appealing to me, since the Audi's 1.8t is prone to sludge issues - having VAG's approval for use in the 1.8t is something useful to me.
I am not ragging on M1 - I have nothing bad to say about it. Just looking into options.
