...and to really know for sure if its just hot or really *too* hot, you need a EGT meeter.
One of the major problems with these external boost controllers is that there is no adjustment of the ignition/timing to keep egts under control. Yes, sooner or later the ecu might react when it detects knockings, but that may very well be too late. Most tuners, all decent tuners, use egt meeters (together with a/f meeter) to optimize the ignition to the new higher boost levels. The stock ECU is designed to make sure things dont run too hot when you use stock boost levels. If you dont, there is nothing the ecu can do to lower egts.
Karl (sometimes seen on this BB) has recently provided an excellent example of how difficult it is to keep egts under control. The software Karl uses in his 9k Aero originates from saab engine development. Despite this, there is a strong recommendation to not do WOT runs longer than than about 20sec since this will produce egts in the four digit range.
