Hi David:
I also prefer a coupe, so the base model is what I hope to get, and all I can afford anyway. After test driving a couple of times, I feel I'll be satisfied with the ride & handling combination that the base model provides, at least initially. But, like you, I may also feel the need to "fiddle" after some time goes by. Where I live, the roads are just plain lousy. Pot holes, ruts, bumps, sink holes, frost heaves, and just poorly maintained roads in general. So, I'm a little sensitive aboout stiffening the suspension and possibly ending up with a ride that's too harsh for tne roads I have to drive on.
I think there have been differing opinions expressed on the board about exactly what parts on the SE suspension differ from those on the base model. You may have to go to a SAAB dealer for a parts list, with part numbers, in order to be certain. But there seem to be lots of informed folks who post on the board, so you should get some helpful suggestions. You might try posting your message on the performance board as well.
Not sure where you live and whether you drive in winter conditions. If so, have you considered keeping the 15" wheels and mounting a good set of snow tires. Then, improving the handling with an upgrade to SE size 16" wheels and performance tires for the rest of the year. Some folks have done this and seem very pleased with the handling improvement. Better than the base model, but not quite as harsh a ride as the SE. It seems like you are looking for a compromise too. Keeping the 15" wheels while altering the suspension. Were you going to upgrade tires as well? I think if I lived where the roads were better, I'd probably like the overall SE suspension too. And of course we all have different perceptions about how much of an improvement we'd like, and what ride is too harsh.
I'll be interested to hear what upgrades you decide on, and how you like the results. Sorry I didn't have the specific answers you were looking for, but I'm sure others will ring in with them.
