The main to know about pistons, is that they are not exactly round and they are tapered, smaller at the top than the bottom. The areas that have the most mass ans see the most heat will expand the most, so the piston tops measure the smallest. The sides where the piston pin go through ar smaller to reduce drag, since this is mostly structural and does not see thrust loads.
Forged pistons mave much more mass than cast pistons, particularly in the piston crown. This means that this area will expand much more in a forged piston once it is brought to operating temps. I feel that your measurents are fine for the piston tops, this is the reason forged pistons tend to slap when cold.
Each cylinder should be bored for the piston that it will recieve at the clearance recommended by the piston manufacturer. .005-.008" sounds about right for forged pistons in a 3.5" bore, but each manufacturer has its own recommendations. You should measure the pistons again on the skirt side, just below the pin boss, then refigure your clearances.
