Hey, Bill, here are some thoughts...

First, please note: I can't remember whether I used to adjust timing when living in the San Juans, but I'm pretty sure I used to advance timing somewhat if tuning for altitude above 7,000. If you're tuning for Denver, you might be able to disregard; if tuning to romp uphill from there, it might be relevant. Please double-check this before you start by calling the local Saab dealership or (better) local Saab club recommended independent mechanic and find out what degree advance for elevation they recomend.) The following is based on stock setting of 16 deg BTDC and a depressing lack of nearby mountains.

AID supposedly allows 3 to 6 degrees additional advance. Stock on my 87 SPG was 16, and I suspect yours also was 16 deg stock. So 17 is well BELOW the target range of 19 to 22. Advance the sucker.

When I installed my AID, I went from 16 BTDC to 19, then 20. 20 seemed very sweet. I haven't had time to get away for an afternoon of runs at speed to play with other settings. If you tracked the dialogue between Monster and Kevin K on the classic 900 bbs, you'll remember that Monster made several runs and settled on 20; Kevin K mentioned a "harshness" at 22 and concurred that 20 is a pretty good ballpark.

Try 20 deg BTDC and see how that fits your pistol. Please share anything you learn about altitude tweaks: I'm suffering altitude withdrawal and planning to move back to Colorado in the next few years.
