Car to car duels

I drive a lightly tuned SAAB 9000 CDE (originally 200 hp, now probably 240) in Singapore, a country the size of a US city. The car is automatic because our country is nearly all urban or suburban. IN fact, nearly all Porsches sold here are the same.
Recently, I was behind a Mercedes CL 500 at a red traffic light. He was the second car from the line. When the light turned green, the first car moved forward. At about 50 kmh (about 30 mph) the lead car peeled off to the next lane. This left the CL 500 free and man, did he turn on the juice. However, I am proud to say that I was with him all the way. I kept my distance at about 3 car lenghts behind, for safety sake. During these runs, my left foot is always over the brake, for extra quick stopping.
We went all the way to about 110 kmh (65 mph). Speed limits are 70 kmh. I think I could have passed him but this was a suburban road with many side roads and it was too dangerous. Anyway, a traffic junction soon appeared, and he turned off.
It was fun and I like to think that I gave the driver of a car costing some US$300,000 a shock with my humble looking SAAB keeping pace with him (cars here cost 3-5 times the cost in the US, as the government wants to keep the no. of cars low).
Next time, I'll describe my "burst" (a term my wife used when she complains about my tendency to "stretch" the legs of my SAAB) with a Ferrari - I lost of course.
PS What is the reason for the suggestion that you get better acceleration by not flooring the pedal but pressing it moderately ?
