Thanks for your help Dave.
You are right about some LSD not initially locking up fully, that's why it is a limited slip vs a full on locker. Wonder what the Quaffe is like? The limited slip isn't like a spool or locker because it will allow for the tires to turn at different rotations. This is typically required because during a turn the outside wheels will travel farther than the inside wheels. With a locker (which I have on my 4x4), you'll either get one wheel to slip (squeeling tire), or they ratchet to allow for some slip. The LSD will also transfer power from one side to the other as it searches for grip. A locker will lock both wheels together like a spool. A spool basically is the next level in that the gears are essentially welded and allow for no pressure relief. If Saab is really cool when they finally release all wheel drive, the center LSD (front to back) will allow for some adjustment just like the rally cars (or new Volvo).

As for the stock traction contol, it probably is programmed to allow some slip because of the different possible rotations of the tires as mentioned above. The problem is that Saab engineers would of designed it for safety in all conditions and made it conservative programming to avoid slip altogether.

My guess is that Saab didn't provide a LSD because of the "torque steer" issue. With a LSD it will probably be more pronounced since both tires will be grabbing for traction and the differential would be attempting to shift power from one side to the other causing even more pulling. Add more horsepower, and the "snake" will become an "angry serpent" to control. That's why Saab needs AWD....

As Sean mentioned below, I also believe Traction Control and LSD together are the ticket to happy motoring.

Later,
Chris Fisher
